|HEQ5 Belt Drive Modification|
|Video of the belt drive on my HEQ5|
I'm pleased to say that having now ironed out the small bugs the mount has been running with good results. I've received a lot a interest, (especially after the modification was featured in the May issue of Astronomy Now) that I was initially able to offer a kit of parts consisting of:
2 x Machined 60t pulley - 2 x Machined 15t pulley - 2 x 6mm kevlar belts - 1 x laser cut perspex spacer - 6 x Replacement cover screws - Fitting instructions
I'm pleased to say that Belting Online now offer a machining service and can supply them ready milled and bored out so you can upgrade your HEQ5. To order please use their on-line shopping cart. The spacer can be obtained from Morris Engraving
Please note that I no longer offer kits myself, but I'm happy to answer any questions you may have if you are looking at upgrading your mount.
Dave (fellow SGL member) has taken the initial concept further and produced a really nice quality CNC machined kit of parts to convert the HEQ5 & EQ6 to belt drive, whilst still retaining the original gear ratios so the mount can still be used with the handset. More details can be obtained from Rowan Astronomy.
