Indoor Flying - Welwyn

What started as just a few friends getting together to share the cost of hiring a large hall has now become a regular event, so much so that in 2001 we formed an informal club. The Welwyn Whirlybirds

We met once a month at the Civic Centre in Welwyn, just off J6 of the A1(M). The hall has a single badminton court with a lot of space around it, with a high roof and flush lighting. Pilots needed to have insurance to fly, and was required to show proof when joining

Motor size was limited to a 410 so nothing larger than a Piccolo Pro could be flown during the meeting although on occasion when the hall was empty we hovered an Eco 8 and a Voyager E !!

The meetings lasted for several years, with people coming from as far away as Cambridgeshire, Essex and west Hertfordshire. The meetings were very sociable, with tea and coffee being provided, along with the odd chocolate biscuit !

The image on the left shows Mark test flying a home made squirrel body on a piccolo, and this sort of kitchen table development projects was the norm back in those days
